Dr Ching-Yu Soar Huang is the founding director of Cambridge Alliance of Legal Psychology; a consultancy committed to improving justice by providing evidence-based research advice and training. She started the consultancy in 2024 after more than 15 years’ experience working full-time in academia internationally (the UK, US, Italy and Taiwan) and more than 12 years working as an intermediary and expert witness. Other than her consultancy work, she also works as the CEO of National Taiwan University Children & Family Research Center.
After receiving her PhD from Cambridge, Dr Huang introduced the NICHD protocol for interviewing child witness into the Taiwanese Judicial system and helped set up the intermediary system in Taiwan. She had contributed to international initiatives such as the designing of the “the Méndez Principle”(an evidence-based investigative interview protocol) which was endorsed by the UN in 2021 (link), the UK Parliament POST’s report on the use of biological methods in asylum age assessments (link), and the vulnerable witness investigative interview reforms in Taiwan (link, in Mandarin).
Dr Huang has been especially recognised for her expertise in cross-cultural issues in communication, evidence gathering and evaluation and in legal proceedings.

Course Content:
This course offers practical cross-cultural communication training for various justice professionals working with people from different cultures, especially those who supports their communication (such as intermediaries), evidence gathering and evaluation. Participants will learn about various levels of culture, how they can affect human cognition, memory and language use, and learn about ways to foster better cross-cultural communication.
The session aims to equip attendees with practical tools to reduce communication misunderstanding and barriers to evidence gathering arisen from cultural differences.
There will be some theory and discussion about culture and how it can influence our perception, memory and speech.
Participants will have the opportunity to have some individual reflection time as well as group discussion time using breakout rooms.
Course Aims/Objectives:
Participants will:
1. Have an understanding of the different layers of culture.
2. Appreciate how culture influence human in daily lives and in our interpersonal communication.
3. Understand how culture can influence human cognition and memoryaccuracy.
4. Learn how culture can affectinvestigative interviews and witness testimony.
5. Develop an awareness of strategies to manage the misunderstanding and inaccurate evidence caused by cultural differences.
Course Method:
The workshop is run in the form of a small group training. The presenters will present information and will invite high levels of participation and sharing of knowledge and ideas. Prepared slides/handouts guide the process rather than impart information.

- Participants to log on 15 minutes prior to start of each session. - It is required that all participants keep their cameras on throughout the workshop. - Participants to complete online feedback form post workshop. |
Cancellation Policy
If you cancel your booking with 14 or more days' notice, you will receive a full refund minus a £15 admin charge (£5 for subsidised courses). If you cancel your booking with less than 48 hours' notice, we are unfortunately unable to offer a refund. However, you may substitute another delegate or transfer to another course by giving IfJ at least 24 hours’ notice.
In exceptional circumstances IfJ reserve the right to issue a full refund. Please inform us at the time of cancellation of your particular reason for cancelling. If you wish to cancel or change your booking, please do so by emailing: admin@intermediaries-for-justice.org
We will endeavour to respond to all cancellation requests within two working days. Refunds will be made using the same method of payment as you used for the purchase and will be paid within seven days of refund confirmation.
Places are limited to a maximum of 20 participants. There is a minimum requirement of 6 participants. If the minimum number is not met, IfJ reserve the right to cancel the course with at least two weeks' notice and a full refund will be issued.
